Note anything broken, worn, cluttered or likely to show up on a buyer's inspection. Then decide what matters for your price range. A condominium near Downtown Silver Spring, a bungalow in Takoma Park, a Bethesda colonial and a townhouse a few blocks from Old Town Alexandria's waterfront may each call for a different level of preparation. ## Step 2: Sort, donate and clean out Clutter hides space, so this step usually comes first. A handyman can often handle a full list in a day or two. For roofs, HVAC systems, electrical panels or plumbing, ask a licensed contractor. It covers scuffs, brightens rooms and photographs well. Painters typically need a clear schedule and furniture moved away from walls, so book them after cleanout. ## Step 5: Deep clean, inside and out After the work is done, a professional deep cleaning covers kitchens, baths, windows, baseboards and floors. Outside, power washing, mulch, trimmed shrubs and a clean front door improve the first impression.
